How tips are calculated
The tip formula is straightforward, but the choice of base amount — pre-tax or post-tax — changes the result. In the UAE, the recommended approach is to tip on the pre-tax subtotal:
Tip amount = Bill subtotal × (Tip % ÷ 100)
Grand total = Bill subtotal + VAT + Service charge + Tip amount
Per person = Grand total ÷ Number of people
When rounding is enabled (e.g., nearest AED 5), each person's share is rounded up individually — so the bill is always fully covered. Source: common UAE hospitality practice and UAE Government tipping guidance.

Worked examples
Dubai restaurant, 4 people
Bill: AED 320 + AED 16 VAT. Restaurant has already added 10% (AED 32) service charge. You want to leave a further 5% tip out of generosity.
Tip = AED 320 × 5% = AED 16. Grand total = AED 320 + 16 + 32 + 16 = AED 384. Per person = AED 96.
AED 16 tip / AED 96 per person
Dubai taxi, fare AED 47
Short hop from DIFC to Downtown Dubai. Driver helped load bags. You round up to the nearest AED 5.
Rounding AED 47 up to AED 50 gives a AED 3 tip — about 6.4%. For a helpful driver, AED 50 is the conventional gesture.
AED 3 tip / AED 50 total
Group dinner, unequal orders
3 friends: Omar ordered AED 120, Layla AED 80, Ravi AED 60. Shared 10% tip on AED 260 subtotal = AED 26. Split proportionally.
Omar: 120/260 × 26 = AED 12. Layla: 80/260 × 26 = AED 8. Ravi: 60/260 × 26 = AED 6. Totals: AED 132 / 88 / 66.

Frequently asked questions
What is the standard tip in Dubai restaurants?
In Dubai, 10% is the widely accepted standard for restaurant service. Many mid-range and upscale restaurants already include a 10% service charge on the bill — always check your receipt before adding more. At budget cafeterias or shawarma spots, tipping is not expected but always appreciated.
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount in the UAE?
UAE convention is to tip on the food and beverage subtotal before VAT (5%). You're rewarding the service team, not paying a percentage on a government tax. Calcureal defaults to pre-tax tipping — you can toggle it in the options if you prefer otherwise.
Is tipping mandatory in the UAE?
No, tipping is not legally required anywhere in the UAE. It is entirely voluntary. That said, many service workers in Dubai earn low base salaries and depend on tips as a meaningful part of their income, particularly in restaurants, hotels, and transportation.
How do I split a bill when people ordered different amounts?
Use the Custom Split tab. Enter each person's name and the subtotal of what they ordered. The calculator automatically allocates the shared tip and any service charges proportionally, so someone who ordered more pays more of the tip — which is the fairest method.
Do Dubai taxis expect tips?
Rounding up to the nearest AED 5 or 10 is the standard approach for Dubai taxis. For a AED 23 fare, paying AED 25 is a simple and appreciated courtesy. For airport runs with luggage assistance, AED 5–10 on top is common. Ride-hailing apps like Careem have in-app tip options.
