The Hijri (Islamic) calendar is lunar, with 12 months of 29 or 30 days totalling 354 or 355 days a year. The Gregorian calendar is solar, with 365 or 366 days. Because the Hijri year is about 11 days shorter, Islamic dates like Ramadan move earlier through the Gregorian year each year.
