Male, 180 cm — 5 formula comparison

Devine: 50 + 2.3 x (70.9 - 60) = 75.1 kg. Robinson: 52 + 1.9 x (70.9 - 60) = 72.7 kg. Miller: 56.2 + 1.41 x (70.9 - 60) = 71.6 kg. Hamwi: 48 + 2.7 x (70.9 - 60) = 77.4 kg. BMI-midpoint (22): 22 x 1.80 squared = 71.3 kg. Range: 71.3 to 77.4 kg. Midpoint: approximately 74 kg.

Female, 165 cm — 5 formula comparison

Devine: 45.5 + 2.3 x (65 - 60) = 57.0 kg. Robinson: 49 + 1.7 x (65 - 60) = 57.5 kg. Miller: 53.1 + 1.36 x (65 - 60) = 59.9 kg. Hamwi: 45.4 + 2.3 x (65 - 60) = 56.9 kg. BMI-midpoint: 22 x 1.65 squared = 59.9 kg. Range: 56.9 to 59.9 kg — very consistent across formulas at this height.

Imperial — Male, 6 ft 1 in (185 cm)

Height in inches = 73. Devine: 50 + 2.3 x (73 - 60) = 79.9 kg (176 lbs). BMI-midpoint: 22 x 1.85 squared = 75.3 kg (166 lbs). Range across 5 formulas: approximately 74 to 82 kg (163 to 181 lbs). Taller individuals show larger divergence between methods.

Which ideal weight formula is most accurate?
No single formula is universally most accurate. The Devine formula (1974) was originally designed for drug dosing in pharmacology, not as a weight goal. Robinson (1983) and Miller (1983) were attempts to refine Devine. Hamwi (1964) is used in clinical dietetics. Because the formulas often agree within 5-8 kg, treat the collective range as your target zone rather than focusing on any one exact number.
Should I try to reach my ideal weight?
Ideal weight formulas are reference ranges, not prescriptions. They were developed for medical dosing calculations and population research, not as personal fitness targets. A more meaningful target is a weight at which your BMI is in the healthy range (18.5 to 24.9), your energy levels are good, and your blood markers (blood pressure, blood glucose, cholesterol) are within normal ranges.
Does frame size affect ideal weight?
Yes. People with larger bone structures naturally weigh more than small-framed individuals of the same height. The Hamwi formula accounts for this with a plus or minus 10% adjustment: add 10% for large frame, subtract 10% for small frame. Frame size is assessed by wrapping thumb and middle finger around the wrist — if they overlap, small frame; if they just meet, medium; if they do not meet, large frame.
How is ideal weight different from healthy weight range?
Ideal weight is a single-point estimate from a clinical formula. Healthy weight range spans the full BMI healthy range (18.5 to 24.9) for your height. For a 170 cm adult, the healthy weight range is approximately 53.5 to 72.1 kg — an 18.6 kg span. The ideal weight formulas typically land around the midpoint of this range (approximately BMI 21 to 23).
Is ideal weight the same for men and women of the same height?
No. All five formulas use sex-specific coefficients because men and women have different average body composition at the same height. Men carry more lean muscle mass and bone density; women carry more essential body fat. The Devine formula for males starts at 50 kg for 5 feet and adds 2.3 kg per inch above that; for females, it starts at 45.5 kg.
What if I am outside the ideal weight range?
Being outside the ideal weight range is not a medical diagnosis. The formulas provide a statistical reference, not a personal health verdict. If you are significantly above or below the range, discussing with a healthcare provider is worthwhile. Meaningful health improvements often occur well before reaching any single ideal-weight target — a 5-10% reduction in body weight from an overweight baseline produces measurable improvements in blood pressure and cholesterol.
Can children use this ideal weight calculator?
The Devine, Robinson, Miller, and Hamwi formulas were developed for adults (18 and older). They are not validated for children or adolescents. For children, weight-for-age and BMI-for-age percentile charts — such as the CDC growth charts for ages 2-19 — are the appropriate reference tools.
How do I convert ideal weight from kg to lbs?
Multiply kg by 2.2046 to get lbs. For example, 70 kg x 2.2046 = 154.3 lbs. To convert back, divide lbs by 2.2046. The Weight Converter on Calcureal handles this instantly with a full reference table.

Ideal weight formulas are clinical reference tools, not personal health targets. Consult a healthcare professional before making significant dietary or lifestyle changes based on weight targets.
